![]() In 2021 work by Giannakis, Freeman, and Mintz as part of graduate independent reading course furthered the research: “During that course and in the subsequent months, we developed a formulation that views data assimilation as information processing through a quantum channel associated with algebras of observables of the dynamical system,” says Giannakis. The paper grew out of a collaboration with Slawinska and Abbas Ourmazd (University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee) on using techniques from ergodic theory and quantum mechanics to perform sequential data assimilation of partially observed dynamical systems, with applications in climate dynamics. Second-year PhD student David Freeman, Professor Dimitris Giannakis, third-year PhD student Brian Mintz, and Professor Joanna Slawinska are authors of the paper Data assimilation in operator algebras, recently published in PNAS. Research by four department authors published in PNAS ![]() Overall the girls really enjoyed the day - they were very engaged in the activities and enjoyed meeting new people. And at the Artistic Tilings workshop, students learned about the mathematics of tilings by a single shape and created their own tilings in the style of M.C. The Impossible Origami workshop showed how to use origami to create constructions that are impossible to do with straightedge and compass. In the Mathematical Games workshop, students learned about mathematical paradoxes and strategies for winning games. Nadia Lafrenière gave the plenary lecture Mathematical Magic with a Deck of Cards, in which students learned how to perform a few card tricks and learned the mathematics behind them. This year the event was organized by Nadia Lafrenière, Tracy Moloney, Rosa Orellana, Ina Petkova, Beth Anne Castellano, and Juanita Duque-Rosero. The day is named after Sonia Kovalevsky, who was the first woman to earn a PhD in mathematics. ![]() Math Fun for Girls at Sonia Kovalevsky DayĪbout 25 middle and high school girls enjoyed a day of mathematical activities at this year's Sonia Kovalevsky Math Day. ![]() Research Associates, Lecturers, and Fellows. ![]()
